Penetration testing services. Find the way in before an attacker does.
Boom Logic delivers penetration testing two ways: human-led engagements that put our security team on the offensive against your perimeter, network, web applications, cloud tenant, and people, and autonomous testing that safely attacks your network on demand and proves every fix. Delivered by our Los Angeles security team, with a presence in One Wilshire and Equinix, for mid-market organizations nationwide.
Penetration Testing, Explained. Find the way in first.
Why a vulnerability scan isn’t a penetration test, how human-led and autonomous testing work, what the rules of engagement cover, and how every fix gets re-tested and every finding reaches the engineers who fix it.
Human-led or autonomous. Two paths to one answer.
Could an attacker get in, and how far? Human-led testing brings expert judgment to the targets that need it. Autonomous testing brings frequency, attacking your network as often as you choose and re-checking every fix. Choose one path, or pair them: an annual human-led engagement for depth, with autonomous testing in between.
Human-led penetration testing
Our security team attacks your environment by hand, applying judgment a tool cannot: business-logic abuse, social engineering, and chained flaws in custom applications.
- Covers: external and internal networks, web applications and APIs, phishing and pretext calls, cloud and Microsoft 365 review.
- Cadence: annual and after major changes. Included every year in Boom 365: MSSP Pro and MSSP Enterprise.
- Best for: compliance audits, cyber-insurance renewals, and custom software.
- You receive: an executive summary, a findings register, compliance mapping, a debrief, and a retest.
Autonomous penetration testing
An autonomous testing platform, run by our security team, safely attacks your live network the way an intruder would, chaining weaknesses into real attack paths and proving each one.
- Covers: internal networks, your external attack surface, Active Directory passwords, AWS and Azure identity, Kubernetes, and phishing impact.
- Cadence: on demand, or scheduled weekly or monthly. No waiting for next year’s test.
- Best for: continuous validation between annual tests and after every change.
- You receive: proven attack paths, prioritized fix actions, and one-click verification that each fix worked.

Human-led penetration testing. Expert testers, scoped engagements, evidence you can defend.
A member of our security team works your environment by hand, under written authorization, chaining findings the way a determined intruder would and documenting every step for your engineers, auditors, and insurer.
Penetration testing across every path an attacker uses.
A vulnerability scanner lists what is exposed. A penetration test proves what an attacker could do with it. Our engagements cover the surfaces that produce real breaches, scoped to your environment under written authorization.
External network penetration testing
Everything reachable from the internet: firewalls, VPN gateways, remote access, mail, DNS, and exposed services. We attempt to gain a foothold the way an outside attacker would, without credentials, and document every step.
Internal network penetration testing
Assume one workstation is already compromised. We test lateral movement, privilege escalation, Active Directory and Entra ID weaknesses, and the path from a single user to your domain controllers and data.
Web application penetration testing
Client portals, patient and case management systems, custom software, and APIs tested against the OWASP Top 10: injection, broken authentication, access-control flaws, and business-logic abuse.
Phishing and social engineering simulation
Targeted phishing campaigns and pretext calls measured by who clicked, who entered credentials, and who reported it, with results that feed security-awareness training rather than blame.
Cloud and Microsoft 365 configuration review
Microsoft 365, Entra ID, Google Workspace, and cloud workloads reviewed for MFA gaps, legacy authentication, over-privileged accounts, mail-forwarding rules, and exposed storage.
Vulnerability assessment and scanning
Authenticated vulnerability scans across every endpoint and server, ranked by exploitability rather than raw CVSS score, and run quarterly for Boom 365 clients between annual penetration tests.
Penetration testing is one component of Boom Logic’s managed security services. For what happens when a threat fires between tests, see managed detection and response.
From rules of engagement to retest, in four documented phases.
Penetration testing is only safe and useful when it is scoped in writing before the first packet is sent. Every human-led engagement, including the complimentary external test, follows the same four phases.
Rules of engagement
We define targets, exclusions, testing windows, emergency contacts, and evidence handling, and you sign a written authorization. No testing starts without it.
Reconnaissance and exploitation
Testers map the attack surface, then attempt real exploitation of what they find, chaining weaknesses the way an intruder would, inside the agreed windows.
Prove impact, not theory
Every finding is confirmed with screenshots, request logs, or captured artifacts, and rated by business impact and ease of exploitation, so nothing in the report is a scanner guess.
Report, debrief, and retest
You receive an executive summary, a technical findings register with remediation steps, and a debrief with your team. Verification retesting of critical findings is scoped into the engagement.
Critical findings are not held for the final report. If a tester gains access that puts data at immediate risk, you are told the same day, and for Boom 365 clients our engineering team begins remediation right away.
Testers who also run the defense on the other side.
Most penetration testing companies hand over a PDF and leave. Ours is delivered by the same security operation that watches, patches, and responds for our managed security clients, so findings become closed tickets.
Findings get fixed, not filed
For Boom 365 clients, every remediation item is assigned to the engineers who already operate the environment. For everyone else, the report is written so your internal IT team or current provider can act on it without a second consultation.
Tested against what our SOC sees
Our test cases are updated from live incidents handled in our 24/7/365 security operations center: the phishing lures, the exposed remote access, and the identity attacks that produced real breaches this quarter.
Authorized, controlled, and safe
Every engagement runs under a signed rules-of-engagement agreement with defined testing windows, an emergency stop, and no denial-of-service testing. External testing is designed to be invisible to your users.
Every year, not once a decade
Penetration testing is included every year in Boom 365: MSSP Pro and MSSP Enterprise, alongside quarterly vulnerability scanning, so each test measures progress against the last one instead of starting from zero.
Autonomous penetration testing. An attacker’s view of your network, on demand.
An annual test tells you where you stood on one day. Autonomous testing safely attacks your live environment whenever you choose: it discovers your assets, chains weaknesses the way a real intruder would, exploits them under production-safe controls, and shows exactly how far it got. Then it re-runs the attack to prove each fix worked.
Autonomous testing across network, identity, and cloud.
Each test type runs on demand or on a schedule, starting with no credentials or with credentials you supply, so you can measure both an outsider’s view and an insider’s.
Internal network testing
Starting from an assumed foothold inside your network, the platform discovers hosts and services, then pivots through weak credentials, misconfigurations, and exploitable software toward domain compromise, sensitive data, and ransomware-level impact.
External attack surface testing
Discovers your internet-facing assets through DNS and open-source intelligence, lets you authorize exactly which ones are in scope, then attacks them for weak or default credentials, misconfigurations, and exploitable services.
Active Directory password audit
Tests account passwords against breach data, dark-web exposure, company-specific terms, and common mutations, then shows the blast radius: how many other accounts one cracked password would open.
Cloud identity testing
With credentials you provide, probes AWS and Microsoft Azure and Entra ID for privilege-escalation paths and over-exposed cloud assets, including routes that start on-premises and end in your cloud tenant.
Kubernetes testing
Deployed inside your cluster, it attacks live containers for RBAC misconfigurations, container escapes, exposed secrets, and runtime vulnerabilities across Amazon EKS, Google GKE, Azure AKS, and self-managed Kubernetes.
Phishing impact testing
Connected to a phishing simulation, any credentials an employee enters feed an authenticated test in real time, showing what one successful lure would have exposed, not just who clicked.
From authorization to verified fix, on your schedule.
Autonomous does not mean unattended or unauthorized. Our security team scopes, configures, and runs every test, and the same written authorization applies as on a human-led engagement.
Scope in writing
Targets, exclusions, credentials, and schedule are agreed in a signed rules-of-engagement agreement before the first test runs.
A lightweight test host
Internal tests run from a small virtual appliance or container on your network. External tests launch from the cloud. Nothing is installed on your endpoints.
Chain weaknesses, safely
The platform chooses each next move from what it finds, chaining credentials, misconfigurations, and vulnerabilities into attack paths under production-safe controls, with a live view of every action.
Fix, then prove it
Findings arrive ranked by impact, with step-by-step proof and fix guidance. Once a fix is in, the exact attack is re-run to confirm the path is closed.
Schedule tests weekly or monthly and your exposure is measured continuously instead of once a year. For Boom 365 clients, remediation items go straight to the engineers who already run your environment.
More than a scan. What autonomous testing gives your team.
A scanner reports what might be vulnerable. Autonomous testing proves what is exploitable, ranks it by business impact, and tracks every fix to closure.
Proof, not severity scores
Each finding shows the exact attack path and evidence of exploitation, ranked by business impact rather than a generic CVSS score, so the noise drops out.
Fixes that close many paths
Remediation guidance highlights systemic issues: the single change that eliminates several attack paths at once, so your team makes the highest-leverage repair first.
One-click fix verification
Re-run only the attack that mattered to confirm a fix worked, the day it lands, without waiting for next year’s test or re-scoping an engagement.
Emerging-threat testing
When a new vulnerability is disclosed and actively exploited, targeted tests check whether it is actually exploitable in your environment, shortly after disclosure.
Decoy tripwires
Decoy files and accounts placed on high-risk assets alert the moment an attacker touches them, covering the window between finding a weakness and fixing it.
Endpoint defense validation
Real attack techniques show whether your endpoint detection and response tools detect, alert on, or block them, host by host.
Crown-jewel targeting
Identifies your highest-value identities and systems, such as executive accounts, domain controllers, and virtualization hosts, and ranks the attack paths that reach them.
Threat-actor mapping
Every technique is mapped to the MITRE ATT&CK framework and to the known threat groups that use it, so priorities reflect how real attackers operate.
Trend reporting
Track open weaknesses, attack paths, and mean time to remediation across every test, with executive reports for leadership and auditors.
Autonomous testing does not replace human judgment on custom web applications, business logic, or social engineering. For those, see human-led penetration testing.
Vulnerability assessment and penetration testing are not the same thing.
All four belong in a security program. If a provider sold you a “penetration test” that turned out to be a scanner export, you paid for the wrong one.
Vulnerability scan
Automated. Lists known weaknesses by CVE with a severity score. Fast and broad, but blind to chained weaknesses and business logic, and prone to false positives. Belongs on a continuous schedule.
Vulnerability assessment
Scan results reviewed and prioritized by an analyst against your environment: what is actually exploitable, what is exposed, and what matters first. Produces a remediation plan, not a raw list.
Human-led penetration test
A human tester attempts real exploitation, chains findings, and proves impact with evidence. It answers the question auditors and boards actually ask: could someone get in, and how far?
Autonomous penetration test
Software performs real, production-safe exploitation of network, identity, and cloud weaknesses and chains them into proven attack paths. Fast and repeatable enough to run monthly or weekly, it complements a human tester’s judgment rather than replacing it.
Boom 365: MSSP Pro and MSSP Enterprise include scanning, assessment, and an annual human-led test, watched between tests by our SOC as a Service. Comparing provider types? Start with MSP vs. MSSP vs. MDR.
Penetration testing comes standard in both MSSP tiers.
You can engage Boom Logic for a standalone penetration test. Most mid-market organizations get more from the testing cadence built into Boom 365, where the team that tests is the team that fixes.

20% off Boom 365: MSSP Pro for qualifying nonprofits.
Donor databases, client records, and grant funds make nonprofits a target, and most have never had a penetration test. Through the Nonprofit IT Empowerment Program (NITEP), qualifying 501(c)(3) organizations get the same annual penetration testing, quarterly scanning, and 24/7/365 SOC our healthcare and legal clients run, at a pooled rate that improves as the program grows. Joining starts at 20 endpoints.
A report your board, auditor, and insurer can all read.
A penetration test that ends in a 200-page scanner dump helps nobody. Every human-led engagement produces four deliverables, each written for the person who has to use it. Autonomous tests produce an executive summary, attack-path findings, and a fix-action report on every run, plus verification evidence each time a fix is retested.
Executive summary
Overall risk posture, the most serious paths to compromise, and what changed since the last test, in two pages a managing partner or executive director can read.
Technical findings register
Every finding with evidence, affected systems, exploitability, business impact, and step-by-step remediation, ordered so your engineers fix the right things first.
Compliance evidence
Findings mapped to HIPAA, the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, and CIS Controls. Pair with Compliance as a Service for full framework management and audit preparation.
Cyber-insurance answers
Carriers now ask whether you test, how often, and what you did about the results. The report and a letter of attestation, available on request, answer all three at renewal.
